Troubleshooting: What do I do if I notice pink mold on my AquaTru?

Pink mold likes dark and wet places like showers and sinks. It is generally considered harmless.

Unfortunately, it can travel by air to find new spots to live. If you have a pink mold problem, you should get rid of it at both the source and in the AquaTru unit. The best way to do this is to clean with a bleach solution.

It will help to keep AquaTru away from heat sources, and thoroughly sanitize the tanks, lid and the internal parts using a descaling kit and bleach solution. We also recommend replacing the Pre-filter.

Here are some troubleshooting tips:

  • Unplug unit - Remove both tanks and turn the unit base upside down to remove the water from the inlet ports on the base.
  • Turn unit back over and fill the base ports with a bleach solution or vinegar as noted below where the tank connectors are inserted and the inside or outside of the tank depending on where the mold is found with either method as follows:

Use a bleach solution:

  • Use the bleach bottle’s recommended mixing ratio to achieve a sanitation level of bleach. Let it stand for at least 30 minutes.
  • Use a Q-tip to clean all exposed areas in the port and tanks.
  • Empty the solution out of the inlet port and tanks by turning the base/tank upside down over a sink. Do not filter the bleach solution through the filters
  • Wash the tank with soap and water and rinse thoroughly.
  • Run 1 tank of tap water through the unit and discard the first tank of filtered clean water.
  • Remember: Always empty the remaining tap wastewater left in the tank before refilling.

If you prefer not to use bleach, you can use 100% white distilled vinegar in 50/50 solution with water (use warm/hot water from the sink):

  • Let it stand for at least 30 minutes.
  • Use a Q-tip to clean all exposed areas in the port/tank.
  • Empty the vinegar out of the inlet port/tank by turning the base/tank upside down over a sink.
  • Wash the tank with soap and water and rinse thoroughly.
  • Run 1 tank of tap water through the unit and discard the first tank of filtered clean water.
  • Remember: Always empty the remaining tap water left in the tank before refilling. Keep the unit away from sunlight and any heat sources.
  • Remember: Each time you handle the tanks make sure to sanitize your hands and working surfaces. It is important to rinse the tanks after each use and wash the tanks with soap and water thoroughly at least once weekly.  Place AquaTru away from direct sunlight and heat sources like a stove or oven. If for some reason, you will not use AquaTru for four or more days we recommend that you empty out the tanks, dry them out, and set them aside. Turn AquaTru upside down to empty out the water in the base, before you set it aside. Always empty the tap tank of wastewater before refilling.
